Great Thoughts for Thinking: (Changed Mondays & Thursdays.)

God never puts us on hold, or uses a voicemail.  --Richard Graham

“Love Sticks Its Neck Out” by Walker Knight, “See How Love Works,” HMB (SBC) magazine

Love sticks its neck out,

way out,

and gets involved.

It doesn’t play it safe.

Love willingly risks itself,

risks itself for the sake of others.

Because love’s way is to act,

love risks being wrong,

even risks doing unintentional harm.

Because love seeks to understand,

love risks being changed,

even risks losing its pat misconceptions

as it walks in the shoes of another.

Because love is not frozen

by its sense of inadequacy,

love risks losing itself in a courageous act,

even risks being misunderstood.

Love sticks its neck out,

way out,

for others.

In preaching, teaching, writing, etc.--Make it Biblical!  Make it point to Jesus!  Make it fun!  --Richard Graham

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

(pix of dandelion) Some see a weed, and some see a wish.

Stress makes you believe that everything has to happen right now.  Faith reassures you that everything will happen in God’s timing.

Start by doing what’s necessary, then what’s possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.  –Francis of Assisi

Our greatest battles are that with our own minds.  –Jameson Frank

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.  –Dale Carnegie

My father didn't tell me how to live, he lived and let me watch him do it.  --Clarence B Keelin

Maturity is doing what you are supposed to be doing, when you’re supposed to be doing it, no matter how you feel.  --Dom Capers, successful NFL coach

Two natures beat within my breast.
The one is foul, the other blessed.
The one I love, the other I hate,
The one I feed will dominate.  --unknow (but sounds like Romans 7!)

A leader innovates, develops, focuses on people, inspires trust, asks what and why, and sees the long view.  —Warren Bennis

Can someone both manage and lead well?  ... one of those rare people who succeeded as a hybrid: the apostle Paul.  Paul’s church-planting prowess is a model for entrepreneurs today.  I believe Paul would define leadership as simply a purposeful psychological effect on others.  He constantly strived to influence the thoughts of his followers, calculating his every action, letter, and spoken word.  Commenting on today’s leadership/management debate, he would say, “Who cares what you call it?  Just get your people thinking and doing the right things.”

Since Paul was an evangelist, influence was his business.  He employed every persuasive tool at his disposal: writing, personal visits, suffering, debating, rebuking, working, resisting, persisting, and risking.  Are those things leadership or management?  Exactly!  They are both.  The same tactics are available to all of us--it is up to us to choose which to use at any given moment.

40 Days of Prayer for the Pastors, Churches, Cities, and Requests of the Long Beach Harbor Southern Baptist Association.  See Prayer Resources above for full lists.

Today's SIG Alert!*

Day 24 – John 14.13-14; 15.16; 16.23-24, 26: And I will do whatever you ask in my name . . . .  You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it . . . .  Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name . . . .  I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.  Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.  Ask and you will receive . . . .  In that day you will ask in my name.

  1. Pray that we will understand what it means to pray in Jesus’ name, and serve with His power and authority as His representative in all our situations and needs.
  2. Pray for Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church, their pastor Rev. John Railback, his wife Jean and their family, their church leaders, and congregation.
  3. Pray for St. John Missionary Baptist Church, their pastor Rev. James Brooks, his family, their church leaders, and congregation.
  4. Pray for the city of South Gate, their elected and appointed officials, their citizens, and for God’s will to be done in that city.
  5. Pray that each of our churches’ leaders will become better leaders, speakers, recruiters to the faith, disciple trainers, husbands or wives, fathers or mothers, and servants of the Lord.

Day 25 – John 16.24, 26-27: Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.  Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete.  In that day you will ask in my name.  I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.  No, the Father himself loves you.  Jude 20-21: Pray in the Holy Spirit.  Keep yourselves in God’s love.

  1. Pray that we will understand that as we are one with Christ through the Holy Spirit, we can pray in His name; we can pray in the Spirit of Christ.
  2. Pray for Christ New Testament Baptist Church, their pastor Rev. John Henderson, his wife Dorselene and their family, their church leaders, and congregation.
