SIG Alert!

40 Weekdays of Prayer for the Pastors, Churches, Cities, and Requests of the Long Beach Harbor Southern Baptist Association.  See Prayer Resources above for full lists and definition of "SIG Alert."

Day 2 – John 4.23-24: Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and truth.

  1. Pray that God will enable us to worship Him in our prayers in spirit and truth.
  2. Pray for the Central Baptist Church, their pastor Rev. Gerald Waddis, his wife and their family, their church leaders, and congregation.
  3. Pray for the United Baptist Church, their pastor Rev. James Go, his wife Mary and their family, their church leaders, and congregation.
  4. Pray for the cities of Avalon and Two Harbors, and for Catalina Island, for their elected and appointed officials, for their citizens, and for God’s will to be done in that city, town, and island.
  5. Pray for leadership workshops in our association, which will train and strengthen church and associational ministry teams in their effectiveness.

Thoughts for Thinking: (Changed Mondays & Thursdays.)

Pray often; for prayer is a shield to the soul, a sacrifice to God, and a scourge for Satan.  —John Bunyan

To pray is to accept that we are, and always will be, wholly dependent on God for everything.  —Tim Keller

The one thing the gospel never does is nothing.  —Ray Ortlund

When a church or denomination works to weed out bad theology, but does not put the same focus on bad character, it ends up a clanging gong.  —Ed Stetzer

If your god never disagrees with you, you might just be worshiping an idealized version of yourself.  —Tim Keller

The enemy wouldn’t be attacking you if something very valuable wasn’t inside of you.  Thieves don’t break into empty houses.  You have a purpose.  —unknown

At least one of Mary Kay’s keys was giving people the keys to owning their own business.  Can that be done in Christian ministry?  What will motivate someone to start their own group/church for the glory of God?  How can we use that motive to launch new works, groups, churches?  —Richard Graham

The difference between greatness and mediocrity is often how an individual views a mistake.  --Nelson Boswell

Play to Your Strengths: The 70-25-5 Principle (e.g., Solomon)

Give 70% of your time to your areas of strength.

Give 25% of your time to the areas you want to improve.

Give 5% of your time to your areas of weakness.  --John Maxwell

I didn’t invite Jesus into my heart; he gave me a new heart.  —Scotty Smith.  RG—This is crucial.  To die to sin is to receive the new heart Jesus needs to give us to be His.

You don’t recover from an addiction by stopping the using.  You recover by creating a new life where it is easier to not use.  If you don’t create a new life, then all the factors that brought you to your addiction will eventually catch up with you again.  —Grateful Addicts in Recovery.  The same thing is often true when breaking free from a persistent sin, which is a crime against God.  —Richard Graham

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.  —Voltaire

1. Matthew—Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, killed by a sword wound.

2. Mark—Died in Alexandria, Egypt , after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead.
3. Luke—Was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost.
4. John—Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution In Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death.
John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison Island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully.
5. Peter—He was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross.  According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die In the same way that Jesus Christ had died.
6. James—The leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club.  * This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the temptation.
7. James the Son of Zebedee—was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong leader of the church, James was beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian.
8. Bartholomew—Also known as Nathaniel Was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip.
9. Andrew—Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: 'I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.' He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired.
10. Thomas—Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the sub-continent.
11. Jude—Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ.
12. Matthias—The apostle chosen to replace the traitor Judas Iscariot, was stoned and then beheaded.
13. Paul—Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D.  Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament.  Perhaps this is a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles and disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith. “And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: But he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”  Pass on to encourage other Christians.  —unknown

Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.  —George Patton, General

A leader is a dealer in hope.  —Napolean Bonaparte

You don’t need a title to be a leader.  —Mark Sanborn
